Colm Hayes is a 25 year old singer-songwriter from Cork. His keen passion for music was evident from an early age, and he began to study suzuki violin at the age of 6. Colm picked up his first guitar at 10 years of age, and from then on, it was the guitar that became his instrument of choice. Colm continued to study classical music at Cork School of Music up as far as his early twenties. He studied the viola under Thomas McCarthy and the double bass under David Whitla. Colm also played both double-bass and viola for the Cork Youth Orchestra (CYO) for many years during this period.
Colm wrote his first song at the age of 12, and has continued to hone his craft from that early age. Playing in numerous bands throughout secondary school, Colm became the lead singer (and chief song-writer) of the acclaimed Cork band "Kudos". Other members of Kudos included Carthach O Nuanain, Niall Dennehy, Cian McCarthy and Deirdre Frost. Jack O' Rourke was a welcomed addition to the band in 2007. Kudos released their 9 track EP, "Roads", independently in 2004 and subsequently appeared on TG4's Ardan. The CD was well received and the track "Day By Day" received air time on both RTE Radio 1 and RedFM. Kudos disbanded in late 2007 and played there last gig in Cyprus Avenue in Cork.
Colm majored in English at UCC, while minoring in psychology. Having spent a year in Latvia, he returned to take up residency in Cork in June 2009. With a wealth of new material, Colm has been gigging around Ireland since his return. Consistently adding to his repertoire, Colm is currently rehearsing with his band hoping to record and tour later this year. Colms career thus far has seen him perform in prestigious venues such as The Ambassador Theatre, The Everyman Palace, The Half Moon, Cyprus Avenue, The Old Oak, The Depot (Riga) etc. Colm has also performed live in RTE studios, as well as performing abroad in Riga, Edinburgh, and Berkeley, California.
Mr. Hayes cites Tom Waits and the Beatles as his main song-writing influences, and his stand-out gravelly voice and unique approach to song-writing makes the Corkonian a rising talent in the Irish music scene. Some say he's a dangerous man, those who know him know him as a cuddly, harmless chappy...
